The film is both charming and clever. Many of the jokes land. The meandering plot works. But I'm afraid a lot of it has simply been padded out with jokes about nannies and tots. Which is just ridiculous.
It begins with Cedric being totally useless in his new job as Nanny McPhee brings him one step at a time back into the world of being Cedric the salesman. In her wonderful narration, she tells him about her work. She, and her assistant Grub, have to solve a hundred cases a year. She becomes embroiled in a group of missing persons. They involve spying on a painting.
The cast make good use of their talents. Emma Thompson, a brilliant actress, is just excellent. Colin Firth's accent is hilarious as he tries to act the salesman. And American comedian, David Spade, does a funny American accent. In fact there are some memorable characters. But they come and go, often without any real development.
There are some funny lines, some nice moments, some excellent attempts at sentiment. The final act is a bit of an anticlimax. But it gets you into it.
And the final thought is that there should be one less piece of history on this film. While this is one of the best-looking films of 2010, it also seems to be a little jaundiced in the production. The US version of this film was released earlier in 2010. It was made by Working Title Films. It received an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So there is absolutely no excuse for not enjoying the film. But the difference between the two versions is that the US version was a bit more faithful to the original. In fact, the US version didn't even have the silly ending. So feel free to enjoy this one.
